FROM BEGINNER TO TOP TEAM TENNIS

Adult Tennis

At St George’s Hill there is plenty of opportunity for adults of all levels to play tennis. From beginner right up to top team tennis, both men and ladies can find like-minded members of a similar standard to play with.

New Members

New members will be invited to a New Members’ Induction with David Collins, who will then advise them on where they would best fit in on the adult programme. For ladies there is an ITN (International Tennis Number) system, which will enable her to join a coaching group for that level. For the men, David will advise as to where a new member will fit in, and put him in touch with the relevant contact. All new tennis members are put in touch with the Racquets Coordinator and the Captains, in order that they have a point of contact at the club to help them to get started.

SOCIAL MIX & CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS

Ladies’ Tennis

The ladies tennis at St George’s is organised using an ITN system. Each colour group has a 90min coaching group every week during the term, organised by our team of pros. There is a system of progression in place for those whose game improves.

For ladies who are working during the week, we run a coaching session on a Thursday evening at 7.30-9pm, with Mike Dawe. Ladies don’t need to sign up for a whole term, but merely turn up and pay each week. This is for players of a blue standard upwards.

In addition, for those with room for improvement or ‘rusty racquets’, David Collins runs our Adult Advanced Beginner session on Sundays at 1-2.30pm. This is a mixed group, and again it is turn up and pay. A number of the Club’s social tennis groups have started off at this group, and have formed their own group playing regularly at the Club.

As well as the coaching sessions, there are plenty of opportunities for ladies to enjoy some friendly competition within the Club. We run ladies singles and doubles box leagues, which are progressive throughout the year. Organised by a committee member, who will endeavour to find a partner for new members, these boxes are a great way to meet other members of a similar standard.

The Broadbent Cup is a ladies doubles competition played through the winter, for all standards, with each pair being handicapped according to their colour group. Matches are 21 games, and, again, this competition is a great way to meet other members.

Alongside these competitions, the Ladies Captains arrange different events throughout the year, such as the Christmas and Easter Tournaments, which are fun, social events with light hearted tennis thrown in.

Ladies social mix-in is on a Thursday morning at 10-11.30am. This is for all standards, and no sign-up is required.

In the spring the Club Championships start and run through to mid July. We have Open and Handicap events, with senior categories in both. These tournaments always produce some fierce competition, culminating in our lovely finals day held in mid July – One week after the Wimbledon Finals.

SOCIAL & CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS

Opportunities for men’s competitive tennis are numerous. We run progressive singles and doubles box leagues throughout the year, with each session lasting a few months. New entrants can join at the beginning of any session. The club will endeavour to find partners for anyone who needs one. Winners of each box move up, losers move down.

In addition, throughout the winter there is a Men’s knock out singles and doubles tournament, competing for the Mike Dawe and the Jack Reardon Cups.

As with the ladies, come the spring the Club Championships start with events for all standards, in our Handicap and Open Tournaments, with Seniors categories in both.

For those who simply want to play social men’s tennis, there are a number of groups that play at various times each week and who welcome new additions. Sunday mornings finds all courts taken by 8.30am with at least 3 of these groups, and then the bar full of coffee drinkers at 10.30, with the added temptation of the breakfast buffet to resist. New members can be put in touch with the organisers of these groups.

THE HUB OF THE CLUB’S TENNIS SCENE

Mixed Social & Team Tennis

Mixed Social Tennis

Mixed tennis forms the hub of the Club’s tennis scene. Club afternoon on Saturdays and Club evening on Tuesdays are open to all and are organised by a member. A charge of £4 is made in the winter months for the indoor courts.

In addition, the mixed box leagues run throughout the year. In the winter months mixed pairs compete over 3 rounds for the Crellin Cup, and in the summer for the Hansford cup. As with the Men’s and Ladies leagues, new entrants can join at the beginning of a round.

There is also a winter mixed knock-out tournament, the Ayers Cup, and the Baker Cup which is a handicap competition with matches played over 21 games.
